How and why the major Universities in the world use Instagram?

Launched in 2010 and acquired by Facebook in 2012, Instagram has taken the mobile photo-sharing niche.
The image-sharing platform has over 400 million users and proves surprisingly versatile for higher marketing.

A PEW Research reported that 32% of teenagers consider Instagram to be the most important social network. Instagram use is especially high among younger adults. Roughly six-in-ten online adults ages 18-29 (59%) use Instagram.
With such a vast audience of prospective students on Instagram, the social network has essentially become the digital brochure of a college. Instagram is a useful and aesthetic way for the universities to reach out to theirs community of prospects, enrolled students and alumni.

More and more colleges and universities around the world are using Instagram to:
1) PROMOTE CAMPUS
For example, Nottingham University shows their parks and how the campus looks through the changing seasons

2) SHARE SUCCESS STORIES
University of Rochester shares the success stories of famous and notable alumni or professor to increase its university credibility, impress prospects and provide a role model for enrolled students.
Here, for example, a congratulation post to Richard Thaler ’74 (PhD), who has been awarded Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences!

The Cambridge University, continously, posts stories about students, researchers and professors.  The image embed below is dedicated to Jerelle Joseph,  a PhD in computational chemistry,  as mentor to encourage others from the Caribbean to pursue their ambitions.

3) POST VIDEOS
Videos have taken over all social media platforms, and Instagram is no exception. With a video it is possible to include results achieved in research, time-lapse footage of one of your events as an openday or a tour of campus.

Nanorobots that patrol our bodies, killer immune cells hunting and destroying cancer cells, biological scissors that cut out defective genes: these are just some of technologies that University of Cambridge researchers are developing and which are set to revolutionise medicine in the future. To tie-in with the recent launch of the Cambridge Academy of Therapeutic Sciences, researchers discuss some of the most exciting developments in medical research and set out their vision for the next 50 years. 4) RUN COMPETITIONS
Instagram can also be a handy way to run competitions and increase engagement with students.
Nevada University, with a different theme for each week, encourages followers in sharing photos with #PackPride about their University experience.
The Instagram user with the best representation of that week’s theme will win swag from The Nevada Wolf Shop.
